Economic Impacts of Child Marriage – through this project the International Center for Research on Women and The World Bank are researching the economic consequences of child marriage, and utilizing the resulting evidence to strengthen the case for ending this harmful practice.
End Child Marriage In New York, Human Rights Watch, in partnership with Unchained At Last, Sanctuary for Families, Tahirih Justice Center and National Organization for Women – Did you know 14-year-olds can legally marry in New York State? From 2001 to 2010, nearly 4,000 teenagers under 18 married in New York. Research strongly links child marriage with dropping out of school, poverty, and mental and physical health problems. But across the nation, women and girls are pressured, forced, and/or manipulated into marrying partners they have not chosen. Just as alarming – the United States is lagging behind other nations in responding to this human rights violation. Tahirih’s Forced Marriage Imitative, launched in 2011, is a national program working to stop forced marriages from occurring in the United States, Falls Church, VA.
